Behaviour change intervention content is comprised of behaviour change techniques (BCTs; the smallest part of the content of a behaviour change intervention that is observable, replicable and on its own has the potential to bring about behaviour change) and the dose.
The Behaviour Change Technique Ontology (BCTO) specifies the ‘active ingredients’ of behaviour change interventions. The BCTO was developed from the Behaviour Change Technique Taxonomy v1 (BCTTv1), a classification of 93 BCTs organised into 16 higher-order clusters. BCTs from BCTTv1 have been mapped to BCTs in the BCTO, which can be found here. View the hierarchical structure of the BCTO here.
The Dose Ontology characterises the amount of intervention content that is delivered. For example, the dose of an active ingredient in a pharmacological intervention, or the number of BCTs included in an intervention. The Dose Ontology is currently under development.
