What does the BCIO cover?

The BCIO currently contains more than 1000 entities but this represents a relatively small proportion of those that will ultimately be needed to cover the field of behavioural science. There is an ongoing programme to extend and update the BCIO and it is hoped that the behavioural science community will get involved in this exercise.

Currently, this includes entities relating to:

  1. Interventions aimed at influencing behaviour, including their content and delivery (e.g., goal setting behaviour change technique),
  2. Engagement with the interventions (e.g., percent of a target population who are exposed to the intervention),
  3. Populations that an intervention may target (e.g., cigarette smokers in the UK aged 18+ years who have been smoking for at least a year),
  4. Settings in which interventions may be delivered (e.g., general practice facilities in the UK),
  5. Events that may be taking place at the time of the intervention (e.g., Covid-19 pandemic),
  6. The target behaviour (e.g., smoking cessation for 6 months),
  7. The outcomes that are recorded in terms of the target behaviour (e.g., 10% reported as stopping smoking for 6 months),
  8. Mechanisms of action by which interventions may influence behaviour (e.g., reduction in craving and nicotine withdrawal symptoms),
  9. Research studies evaluating behaviour change interventions (e.g. study arm in a randomised controlled trial. biochemical verification of abstinence).
